The Finnish flag "Siniristilippu" was designed by the artists Eero Snellman and Bruno Tuukkanen at the start of the 20th century when the country declared its independence from Russia.
The cross design symbolizes the fact that Finland is part of the community of Nordic nations. The white is said to symbolize the whiteness of the snow that covers the country. The blue is said to symbolize water in the "Land of a Thousand Lakes".
