Kalevala's Thor's Hammer Necklace influence is drawn from prototypes from the Viking era of the years 800-1050. Thor was the Viking god of thunder who used his hammer to rule and dispense justice. When it thundered, people believed that Thor was riding across the vault of heaven in this carriage pulled by goats. The blows of his hammer created the peals of the under and from the sparks of the hammer came lightning. The pendant depicting the hammer became known as the symbol for Thor and it was believed to protect its carriers from evil. The fearsome Vikings are known to have worn a pendant very similar to this Kalevala necklace.
