Maija Isola painted Unikko in 1964 as a direct act of defiance — Marimekko's founder had banned floral prints entirely, convinced no design could match the beauty of a real flower. Isola disagreed, and the oversized, freehand poppy she created became the most iconic print in Finnish design history.
