Karpalo is Finnish for cranberry, and the earring is exactly that literal: one maple bead, cranberry-sized at just over half an inch, hanging from a fine hook with a small brass bead beneath it. The berry grows across Finland's peat bogs and survives conditions almost nothing else will, which is a reasonable thing for a piece of jewelry to be named after.
