The Marttiini Kerääjä — Finnish for "gatherer" — is a knife designed from the ground up for mushroom foraging. Every detail, from the curve of the blade to the direction of the handle turn, has been considered around the specific movements and needs of time spent in the forest picking mushrooms.
The 2.75-inch stainless steel blade curves gently upward — a shape designed to slice cleanly through a mushroom stem in a single smooth motion. That clean cut matters: slicing rather than tearing preserves the mycelium beneath the surface, the underground network that allows mushrooms to keep growing season after season. The steel is the same grade used in quality kitchen knives, holding a fine edge well and resisting corrosion in damp forest conditions.
The heat-treated birch handle is turned counter to the blade's grind — a deliberate ergonomic choice that positions the hand naturally for the inward pulling motion most common when harvesting mushrooms. The thermal treatment deepens the birch to a warm brown and improves its resistance to moisture. At the pommel end, a brush of genuine wild boar hair is firmly set into the handle — stiff enough to remove dirt, debris, and insects from freshly picked mushrooms, but soft enough not to damage delicate caps.
The matte brown leather sheath features a versatile quick-fix attachment with eyelet rivets — designed to clip easily to a belt, belt loop, wrist, or directly to a basket handle, keeping the Kerääjä within reach wherever the foraging takes you. A thoughtful tool and a natural gift for anyone who loves time in the woods.
