Oversized florals in dramatic beige and black — the Makeba pattern has been turning heads since American artist Howard Smith designed it for Vallila in 1968, naming it after Miriam Makeba, the South African singer and human rights activist. Smith won the Finnish State Design Prize in 2001, and his works are held in museum collections including the Ateneum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Makeba is one of his most enduring designs.
