Karpalo is Finnish for cranberry, and the earring is exactly that literal: one maple bead, cranberry-sized at just over half an inch, hanging from a fine hook with a small brass bead beneath it. The berry grows across Finland's peat bogs and survives conditions almost nothing else will, which is a reasonable thing for a piece of jewelry to be named after. Maple is the wood Aarikka chose for pieces like this, hard enough that a bead worn daily for years keeps its shape and its finish. The khaki green sits between olive and moss depending on the light and on the grain underneath. A one-inch drop, nickel-free findings, and light enough to wear from morning through dinner.
