Merino and linen do different jobs, and this blanket uses both: merino spun into the warp for warmth and softness against the skin, linen carried through the weft for strength and drape. The Lapuan Kankurit TULPPAANI Wool Blanket is woven that way at the family mill in Lapua and finished with a white fringe at each end.
Helmi Liikanen designed the pattern as part of her textile studies at Aalto University, combining different weave structures and warp densities — which is why the tulips shift in texture across the cloth, some solid, some finely hatched. Tulppaani is Finnish for tulip. Liikanen has said she cares as much about how a textile feels as how it looks, and this one bears that out; it has weight without bulk.
At 51" x 71" it covers a sofa, a twin bed, or a pair of shoulders, and it's reversible — cinnamon tulips on blue on one side, blue on cinnamon on the other. A lasting gift for a wedding or a new home.
