The Karpalo Earrings put one round maple bead, just over half an inch across, on a fine hook with a small brass bead at its base, and the whole piece stands or falls on whether that sphere is turned true — no flat spot, no visible glue where the fitting enters. Karpalo is Finnish for cranberry, the berry that reddens Finland's peat bogs each autumn, and this red is the color the name comes from. It is dyed into the wood rather than laid over it, so the grain reads through and the surface keeps a faint sheen. A one-inch drop on nickel-free findings, light enough to put in at breakfast and forget until you take them out.
