Most beaded necklaces hide their fastening at the nape. The Valma Necklace brings it around to the front and makes it the point: a polished bar-and-ring toggle sitting at the center of the throat, with a single larger maple bead — nearly three-quarters of an inch — hanging beneath it. The strand itself is close-set beads just over three-eighths of an inch across, hand-dyed a deep, saturated red that settles into the grain rather than sitting on top of it, the result of a dye formula the workshop has kept to itself since the 1950s. At 16.5 inches it rests right at the collarbone, high enough to wear with an open collar and read clearly against it.
