A necklace this size usually comes with a weight penalty. The Suomi Necklace does not: the spheres are maple, a little under three-quarters of an inch across, and the strand rests on the collarbone without pulling at the neck. Black is dyed into the wood by a method Aarikka developed in the 1950s and has never published, which is why the surface keeps a soft sheen and the grain stays faintly visible instead of vanishing under a coat of color. One polished steel bead stamped with the aarikka mark breaks the run. It measures 15.75 inches on an elastic strand and goes on over the head with no clasp to fasten. Kaija Aarikka designed it, and it does what she wanted her work to do: it is impossible to miss, and effortless to wear.
