The tail is where this cat's character sits — a thick curve rising up and over the back, on a rounded body just 2.5" tall. Kaija Aarikka designed the piece in the 1980s, and the company she founded in 1954 still makes it the same way, by hand in Finland from maple. The black is deep and even with a low sheen, and a dry cloth is all the care it asks for. It fits a windowsill, a bookshelf, or the corner of a desk without claiming the whole surface — a Finnish design gift for cat people, and for anyone who likes a small object with a long production history behind it.
