Aarikka Suomi Necklace, ecru
Large maple spheres, each a little under 3/4" across, strung close on elastic and interrupted once by a polished steel bead stamped with the aarikka mark. Suomi is the Finnish word for Finland, and the necklace is Kaija Aarikka's own design — it holds the two convictions she built the company on in 1954: that design exists to bring joy, and that wood deserves to be taken seriously. In ecru the maple is left near its natural pale tone, the grain still legible beneath the finish, and no two necklaces take the color quite alike; the tree decides that. It measures 15.75 inches, rests at the collarbone, and pulls on over the head without a clasp — substantial to look at, almost weightless to wear.
