Bold, oversized florals sweep across this 100% cotton apron in dramatic beige and black — a pattern that's been turning heads since American artist Howard Smith designed it for the Finnish textile house Vallila in 1968. Smith named the pattern after Miriam Makeba, the South African singer and human rights activist, and the flowers carry that spirit — expressive, generous, and completely unafraid to take up space.

Vallila has been a Finnish design institution since 1935, and Smith's large, bold prints remain a signature of the brand's identity to this day. Smith — one of the few Black artists working in Finnish design — went on to win the Finnish State Design Prize in 2001, and his works are held in museum collections including the Ateneum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
